Watch the story
EAST VALLEY — It’s a skill you hope you never have to use, but when a man collapsed at the Safeway Starbucks off 5th and Lincoln Thursday night, Jessica Baken turned knowledge into action.
“At first I didn’t really know what to do, I just freaked out and stood there kind of in shock like everybody else was. Then it just kind of clicked. You know, survival mode: click.”
She’d just finished the CPR section of health class at East Valley High, where she’s earning her CPR certification. And when she saw a man collapse in front of her, training kicked in.
“I couldn’t feel a pulse, anything so I had my breathing class from Ms. LaBeau’s class in my purse. II went and grabbed that and started CPR.
“I was so proud of her that she did everything, and did everything correctly. And she saved somebody’s life. I mean that will stay with her forever,” Dr. LeBeau said of her quick-thinking student.
But Jessica got more than a story. She has the knowledge and the ability to save a life.
“If someone faints, I don’t feel like I’m going to be the one watching. I’m going to be the one helping. I’m not going to be the bystander wondering what’s going on. I’m going to be helping them and stuff like that. And that’s a really good feeling.”
That lesson she learned in a classroom, quickly became a lifesaver outside of it.
